The Portugal Golden Visa Program presents foreigners with the opportunity to call a major European country home. Since 2012, Portugal—one of the most vibrant and popular on the continent—has granted residency to third-country nationals through its Golden Visa Program. By purchasing real-estate in Portugal, applicants may achieve Residency by Investment (RBI) in the country, where they may choose to reside, work, and study—or simply visit whenever they wish (there are no major residency requirements to this RBI program). As well as Portuguese residency rights, recipients of the country’s Golden Visa also receive visa-free access to the Schengen area.
The Golden Visa is a kind of Portugal Permanent Residency Programme, which enables economic residency in Portugal through investment in real estate. Currently, the Portugal Golden Visa for 2022 offers two pathways to residency:
1. Purchase un-renovated real estate.
2. Purchase real estate in need of renovation (at a lower cost).
Regardless of which avenue is pursued, all property purchased under the terms of the Golden Visa program must be held for five years in order for Golden Visa holders to maintain their residency.

The Westernmost country in mainland Europe, Portugal shares its borders with Spain and the Atlantic Ocean. Naturally beautiful with rugged, dramatic coastline, Portugal has long been a popular tourist destination. In recent years, however, Europeans and other nationalities have chosen to relocate to Portugal permanently. Drawn to its low cost of living (relative to major European states), vibrant housing market, and bubbling business development community, new residents are increasingly recognizing the financial advantages of residency—not to mention the lifestyle benefits of long-term immersion in Portuguese culture. Lisbon, its capital, is renowned for its fantastical architecture, café scene, and musical heritage. Exceptional cuisine can be found throughout the country, which boasts warm weather across its varied terrain. In addition to its iconic beaches and cork trees, the country is also renowned for its golf courses, which draw players from around Europe. Portuguese is the national language; English is common throughout Lisbon and other urban areas. A Schengen and EU Member State, Portugal accepts the Euro.
